| 1......Row over Nanking massacre 'lie' |
BBC News, Thursday, 20 January
A conference in Osaka in Japan calling the Nanking massacre a lie is to go ahead, despite
protests from the Chinese Government.
The organisers of Sunday's conference - entitled The Verification of Nanking, the biggest
lie of the 20th Century - say they will prove that accounts of the massacre are grossly
exaggerated.
What actually happened when the Japanese army captured the Chinese city has been the
subject of intense historical debate.
China says the Japanese killed 300,000 civilians; other historians put the death toll at
at least 140,000. But some in Japan believe that no atrocities took place.
Japanese Officials say they cannot cancel the event as it would infringe on the
constitutional right to freedom of speech. But they said they had carried lengthy
discussions before deciding to go ahead.
The centre also pointed out that it has also shown exhibitions which say the Japanese
soldiers did commit atrocities in Nanking.
The Chinese Government has protested against the meeting, as have peace groups in Japan. |

| 2......Time Warner, EMI To Merge |
|
|
AP News, Sunday, January 23
Time Warner, which just two weeks ago announced a $145 billion merger with America Online,
is expected to reveal plans Monday to merge its music division with EMI Records, which has
rights to stars such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
The deal would be worth some $20 billion, a source familiar with details told The
Associated Press. The formal announcement will be made in London, said the source, who
spoke on condition of anonymity.
London-based EMI confirmed Sunday that it is in the final stages of negotiations and said
an announcement is forthcoming. Time Warner in New York also acknowledged the talks, but
spokesman Edward Adler said, ``No deal has been signed.''
The deal, if approved by regulators and shareholders, would likely be a boost for music
sales over the Internet. Both Warner and EMI have been testing ways to let customers
digitally download music via their computers.
The merged company, to be called Warner EMI Music, would be the second-largest music
company with more than $8 billion in annual sales. Only Seagram's Universal Music would be
bigger. |

| 3......New Ecuador President at Work in Govt.
Palace |
|
|
Reuters News, Sunday, January 23
Ecuador's new civilian president, Gustavo Noboa, entered Government Palace to begin work
on Sunday one day after a military coup sparked by the nation's severe economic crisis
brought him to power.
``Peace, progress, and justice,'' Noboa, Ecuador's fifth president in three years, said
while waving to reporters on the balcony of the colonial Government Palace surrounded by
elite armed troops.
The 62-year-old former vice president assumed the presidency of Ecuador on Saturday with
backing from the military and quickly received the support of deposed leader Jamil Mahuad
and Congress, as well as muted support from the United States.
The backing for center-right Noboa appeared to strengthen fragile civilian rule in the
nation of 12.4 million people, an odd man out in Latin America where many other countries
have made strides toward constitutional democracy and painful reforms to stabilize their
economies. |

|
|
AP News, Sunday, January 23
``American Beauty,'' a dark fable of life in suburbia, captured the Golden Globes for best
drama, director and screenplay Sunday night, while ``Toy Story 2'' was judged the best
comedy movie.
Denzel Washington's portrayal of a boxer wrongly convicted of murder and Jim Carrey's
uncanny impersonation of the late comic Andy Kaufman won top movie actor honors as
real-life stories ruled at the awards ceremony.
Picking up his Globe for best dramatic movie actor, Washington was accompanied to the
stage by Rubin ``Hurricane'' Carter, whose story was told in the film ``The Hurricane''
``Everything that has happened with this film and this moment is about the love that has
come from him,'' Washington said. |

| What would eventually become one of the world's most prestigious museums,
the Louvre Museum opened in Paris in 1793. Until the French Revolution, the King's art
collection had been strictly for the private pleasure of the Court, but revolutionary
leaders decided to open the collection to the public. Among some of its most famous art
pieces, the Louvre houses the Joconde (Mona Lisa), Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory of
Samothrace, and the Liberty Leading the People. |

Random Thought
Lisa Xu
At dusk, I stand beside the lake,
Enjoy the wonderful peace and pray,
"Is there any angel who may,
Help me out when my heart is gray ? "
The waters twinkle as a breeze blows,
I see the reflection of my own.
All at once, I come to know,
The key I've been searching is just so.
Some day you come across difficulty,
Just be yourself and be in reality.
The only enemy is no one but you,
To beat and to be beaten as a whole.

groupie
court
Alternative has no strict definition, but it has a feel. Its musicians reject show-biz
glitz. They support progressive social causes. Many of them avoid dating groupies and models.
(另类音乐)没有严格的定义,可是有它特殊的感觉。它的乐手排斥演艺界的浮华。他们支持改进社会的目标,许多人也避免和乐迷与模特儿约会。
By trial's end, all the contentious testimony may be reduced to a news twist on age-old
gender imperatives. Either : a star thinks he can takes anything he wants. Or: inside
every good girl beats a groupie's
concupiscent heart.

| 1......A razor named Gillette |
|
In 1895, a traveling salesman named King Camp Gillette had an inspiration
that changed the face of man - literally. He said, "On one particular morning I
started to shave and found my razor dull. It was not only dull but it was beyond the point
of successful stropping and it needed honing, for which it must be taken to a barber.
"As I stood there with the razor in my hand ... the Gillette razor was born. I saw it
all in a moment, and in that moment many unvoiced questions were asked and answered more
with the rapidity of a dream than by the slow process of reasoning."
Although he received the vision for his razor in but a moment, Gillette spent eleven years
of experimentation and hard work before he saw his first dollar of profit. Along the way
he spent more than $250,000 on lab tests to determine the quality of steel necessary. He
experimented with blades for almost six years. He admitted, "If I had been
technically trained, I would have quit."
In its first year of production, the Gillette company sold only fifty-one razors. By 1904,
however, 91,000 razors were sold. By 1917, annual sales reached one million.
Your dream may have come in an instant, but it may take a lifetime to develop. Work on! |
